The gaze first: two orange bead eyes in a mask embroidered with turquoise beads, a needle-worked yellow beak. Around the face, a plumage of real feathers, blue-grey in a crown, rust and cream across the breast, laid one by one on the black painted canvas. Embroidery makes the face; feathers make the bird.
